This rare footage is a kinescope of a performance by Art Tatum on the Spike Jones in 1954. This version of Yesterdays by Jerome Kern is a breathtaking example of the bridge between the "stride" piano of the 20's and 30's and the emerging bebop style of the day.
However, Art Tatum was genius of the highest order who truly transcended all styles. This blind artist was so incredible he wasn't "influential" in the same sense as others such as Bud Powell or Bill Evans-his protean technique was so overwhelming few attempted to copy him.
