I was very fortunate to see, hear and meet the great Sun Ra several times. In addition to see the Arkestra live in a variety of settings I also by chance got to listen to Sun Ra play solo piano in the parlor of a bed and breakfast in Garberville one morning-unforgettable!
Perhaps there is no great manifestation of the frustration and pain of growing up in segregated Alabama than Sun Ra's alter ego and his desire to colonize another planet to get away from this Earth's troubles. REALLY the blues!
